About this Custom Number paint

Upon his Winston Cup move to Robert Yates Racing during the 1993 season, Ernie Irvan’s Busch Grand National team was temporarily mothballed. Irvan ran just one race for his own Chevrolet Busch team after making the switch to the powerhouse Ford team on the Cup side, that being the fall Charlotte race. In that race, Irvan reunited with 1991 sponsor Mac Tools, and the groundwork was set for his 1994 Busch campaign. For 1994, the team switched to Fords with Irvan’s Thunderbirds displaying Mac signage and sporting Irvan’s new cup number: 28. Irvan scored two top fives on the season, which was cut short by his life-threatening injuries sustained at a Winston Cup practice crash at Michigan in August. Following the accident, Mark Martin and Todd Bodine each drove one race in the car in a fill-in role. The team never made another start, but did attempt one race, Homestead in 1995, where Irvan was unable to qualify.

The Grand National Legends project is a series of paints dedicated to the most significant Busch Series drivers and cars of the 1990s. Part 2 of the series covers the years 1990 through 1994. Follow me for updates: twitter.com/iam27paul
