About this paint

Winamp was a music player for Windows computers, created by Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev in 1997. The name came from "Windows" + "AMP" (Audio Media Player).

It was one of the first programs that let regular people play MP3 files on their computers, which was a huge deal at the time because digital music was brand new. A small company called Nullsoft built it, and it spread like wildfire across the early internet — mostly because it was free and actually worked really well.

At its peak in the early 2000s, Winamp had around 60 million users. It was known for its cool, customizable "skins" — basically decorative themes that could make the player look like anything from a spaceship to a wooden stereo. It also had a legendary intro: a cartoonish llama getting whipped, followed by the phrase "Winamp — it really whips the llama's ass." Weird, yes, but totally unforgettable. AOL bought Nullsoft for $80 million in 1999, hoping to cash in on the digital music boom.

Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. AOL wasn't great at managing it, and then iTunes and eventually Spotify came along and made dedicated music players feel outdated. AOL shut Winamp down in 2013, shocking millions of nostalgic fans. But the story didn't fully end — the software changed hands a couple of times, and developers have been working on a modern version of Winamp in recent years, trying to bring it back for a new generation.
